“Diatom Preparation and Microtechnique” with Prof. Dr. Shigeki Mayama

Surakarta, September 18, 2025 – The Undergraduate Biology Education Program, the Master’s Program in Biology Education, and the STEAM Center of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), continued the series of International Workshops on its second day with the theme “Diatom Preparation and Microtechnique.”

The workshop featured Prof. Dr. Shigeki Mayama from the Department of Biology, Tokyo Gakugei University, Japan, as the keynote speaker. The event took place on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the Ecophysiology Laboratory, Building D, 2nd Floor, Faculty of Teacher and Training Education, UNS.

In this session, participants were introduced to techniques of diatom preparation and slide-making. They had the opportunity to observe diatoms from various river samples while also learning microtechnique methods used to examine the diversity of these microalgae.

Through this activity, students, lecturers, and other participants were expected not only to gain practical experience in diatom observation but also to broaden their insights into research opportunities in aquatic ecology and biology education.

This international workshop is part of Faculty of Teacher and Training Education UNS ongoing efforts to enhance academic quality, strengthen international collaboration, and provide students with hands-on experience in research-based science.
